The Master of Arts in Teaching Spanish will offer the next installment of their webinar series on Thursday, October 27th. The presentation, “Concept-Based Pragmatics Instruction for the L2 Classroom,” will be given by Dr. Rémi A. van Compernolle of Carnegie Mellon University. The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Armitage Hall Faculty Lounge.
This webinar will introduce concept-based pragmatics instruction, an approach to teaching L2 social meaning explicitly in the classroom that focuses on guiding learners to internalize categories of meaning or psychological tools that mediate language choices. Using a recent study of teaching pragmatics in Spanish as a starting point, theoretical foundations of the approach as well as practical issues related to task design and curricular complementarity will be discussed.
