2025-2026 Sabbatical Leave

The Sabbatical Leave Program provides one and two-semester leaves to eligible faculty members to undertake projects of academic significance to themselves and their departments or units. Faculty are not required to be in attendance at the University during a sabbatical leave. The Program is administered by the Dean’s Office of Arts and Sciences for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. It is preferable that applications be submitted through DocuSign.

2024-2025 Competitive Leave

The University’s Competitive Fellowship Leave program allows eligible faculty members the opportunity to take advantage of fellowship offers made through several prestigious and highly competitive national and international programs, e.g. Fulbright, Guggenheim, Mellon, Social Science Research Council, American Council of Learned Societies, without major financial detriment.

Please note:  Faculty eligible for faculty leaves must also receive approval by their Department Chair and Dean. Typically, approval is based on the teaching needs of the department and overall budget. If you have questions regarding sabbatical or competitive leave, please feel free to contact Maria Buckley at maria.buckley@rutgers.edu, (856) 225-2951 or your Department Chair. Also, before submitting your application to the Dean’s Office for final approval and processing, the Department Chair endorsement must be included.

2025-2026 Non-Instructional Assignment Application and Instructions

The University provides eligible faculty members the opportunity to request a one- or two-semester non-instructional assignment which allows them to concentrate on a research project of academic significance to themselves and their departments or schools/units in their assigned field of study and for which the faculty member will be paid at 100% of their base salary (“Non-Instructional Assignment”). Faculty who are approved for a Non-Instructional Assignment will be required to:

  • Undertake the research project approved by their Dean and Chancellor for non-library faculty, or their unit director and the Vice President for University Libraries and University Librarian (“Vice President for University Libraries”) for library faculty;
  • Submit a minimum of one periodic written report during each semester of the Non-Instructional Assignment, at a pre-established interval, detailing research and activities accomplished; and
  • Submit a minimum of one periodic written report during each semester of the Non-Instructional Assignment, at a pre-established interval, detailing research and activities accomplished; and

Faculty members are not required to resume their duties at Rutgers or return to University service following a Non-Instructional Assignment. For non-library faculty, a Non-Instructional Assignment is administered by the office of the respective Dean and Chancellor. For library faculty, a Non-Instructional Assignment is administered by the unit director and the Vice President for University Libraries, regardless of the library faculty member’s geographic location.
