Join the Writers House on Jan. 22 for “In Conversation with Harvey Finkle”

In conversation with the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice and the Department of Visual, Media, and Performing Arts, the Writers House welcomes photographer Harvey Finkle. Harvey will be in conversation with Dr. Joanie Mazelis and will be spotlighting his book Readers, which uses photography to engage with the issue of book banning.

For nearly five decades, Harvey Finkle has used photography to advocate for people who are dispossessed or marginalized, working with individuals experiencing homelessness; advocates for the abolition of the death penalty; poor people’s movements; members of Deaf Culture; disability rights groups; refugees and immigrants from myriad countries, among other groups. Dr. Joan Maya Mazelis is an Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice, an affiliated scholar at Rutgers–Camden’s Center for Urban Research and Education (CURE), and director of the Gender Studies Program. Dr. Mazelis specializes in the study of poverty and social ties, using qualitative interview methods to explore the meaning and understanding people have of their own situations. She is the author of Surviving Poverty: Creating Sustainable Ties Among the Poor (2017, NYU Press). Dr. Mazelis is passionate about using research to advance public understandings of important issues and amplifying the voices of those in poverty.
